Deadlands Tournament

"Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!"

There are Deadlands fans, and then there are Deadlands fans. Staley and I definitely fall into the latter category. Seeing as how this may well be my last Polycon for a long while and how much I've always wanted to throw a giant bash for my fellow DL fiends, I got together with Matt Staley and we cooked up something unprecidented in the history of polycon: a multi-format tournament:

Round One consists of four six-person table-top rpgs of 4 hours each, the survi... uhh... winners of those rounds will advance to Round Two: a 6 hour, 12 person double-blind game. 6 players from Round Two have even more mayhem in store for them as they advance to Round Three: a 6 hour LARP, where it's winner take all!

So that's what's up! Here's a little background flavor on the world and some descriptions of Round One so y'all can make up yer mind about where to start:

Gather 'round, folks! Have we got us a yarn fer you! You folks familiar with the Reckoning? No? Well, I ain't got enough time to tell ye everything that's happened in the last 13 years, but lets just say the West is a little Wierder these days: Strange Critters roamin' the prarie, Injuns callin on the Spirits for strength in battle... and the Spirits answerin' back, Card-Sharps incerneatin whole towns with the flash of a poker hand... Yep things ain't what they used t'be, and that's where this tale starts.

A few months ago, word started spreadin' through the West of a Poker Tournament, a Tournament to end all Tournaments, where the best players in the West would be lucky to even show up to the game, let alone walk away with the pot, a cool half-million in gold! Now if that was the story, that would be a darn good 'un, but that's only part of the story, see. See whats really interesting ain't so much the game itself as who actually showed up to play...

To: A.P. Washington Bureau, The Agency

    Re: Laramie, Wyoming
Agent 135-7, stationed in and around Laramie, has gone missing. From his last dispatches to the home office, he was investigating a strange illness that seemed to be cropping up among the local ranch hands. Intelligence from an outside advisor suggests the situation may be more critical than previously thought. Due to a shortage of personell, I will be leading a small team of Cleaners to Laramie to investigate. This message will self-destruct in 10 seconds...

...Word round the camfire these days is that some of the meanest, fastest, orniest, shoot-thier-own-grandma-in-the-back-fer-a-gold-eagle cusses ever to strap on a six shooter are gatherin together in Tombstone. Seems they've gotten wind of one of the biggest hauls of gold ever shipped, $500,000 worth, is gonna be movin' through there real soon and they aims t' git it, by whatever means necessary!

Deadlands Tournament - Round 1D
One Riot, One (Posse o') Ranger(s)

Yeah, yeah. I know I should be able to handle this myself. Hell, it's only a small outbreak of Texas Tummy Twisters, nothin' some well placed TNT can't take care of, but I got a funny feelin' about this one. I remember passin' through Los Noches a few years ago and somethin' about that town didn't seem quite right. Way to many gamblers 'round there for my taste, and not the kind that play for penny-ante stakes. The kind that play with the devil for thier very souls. If those spell-slingers have anything to do with this, I'm gonna be in for a world of hurt. Looks like it's time to send in The Marching Band.
